Hyllus plays harmonica regularly with New York-based country blues and trad jazz guitarist Matt Wiffen, since they first started jamming together at (the now defunct) The Late Late on the Lower East Side. Wiffen’s repertoire goes deep into the country blues of such greats as Rev Gary Davis, Blind Blake, Brownie McGhee, Memphis Minnie, Scrapper Blackwell, Tommy Johnson, and Lonnie Johnson (to name just a few) on the one hand, and the early blues-based jazz of Bessie Smith, Clarence Williams, Ma Rainey and (the somewhat later) Little Brother Montgomery on the other. Matt Wiffen and Hyllus appear monthly every second Thursday at Jalopy Tavern in Carroll Gardens, and monthly at Stitch Blues Bar in Midtown Manhattan’s Garment District (usually on a Wednesday).
